Exfoliating 101

Exfoliating 101

I have never had amazing skin.  I, like many others, am on a constant hunt for products or treatment that will help to improve it.  My main concerns are pores, texture and breakouts.  One step that helps with all of these concerns is exfoliation.  Here are a few basic tips to help get you started:

Pick Correctly

Often people use the wrong exfoliator, which can lead to more problems, such as irritation or breakouts.  Make sure to find one suitable for your skin type.  If you are extremely sensitive, then use a cream based exfoliant.  If you have acne prone skin, use an exfoliating mask instead of a scrub.  Consult a dermatologist before using an exfoliator if you are using any medications for skin problems, as some medications can make the skin too delicate for exfoliation.

Use Often

To see results it is important to use on a regular basis.  Most exfoliators should be used 1-3 times a week depending on the strength of the scrub.   Make sure to follow the directions and never scrub the skin aggressively.  After cleansing, I gently massage my exfoliator in a circular movement, avoiding the eye area.

Apply Suncreen

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and renew the skin.  It is important to remember to wear sunscreen, since certain ingredients can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and increase the chance of burning.  I use a tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 everyday and I make sure to apply a stronger SPF if I am going to be out in the sun all day.
